Vegetarian Festival Gone Wild

Welcome back and happy Monday to you all. I just came across a strange ritual in Thailand called the Vegetarian Festival. The Vegetarian Festival is a religious festival held annually during the ninth lunar month of the Chinese calendar on the island of Phuket south of Thailand. During the festival, local residents of Chinese ancestry strictly observe a 10-day vegetarian diet for the purposes of spiritual cleansing and merit-making. According to Wikipedia.com (the most reliable source) stated that “Many religious devotees will slash themselves with swords, pierce their cheeks with sharp objects and commit other painful acts.”

Some of the most bizarre aspects of the ceremonies includes body piercing, curing athlete’s foot or commonly known as fire-walking, and piercing facial areas with huge object like a bicycle.

To sum it all up I think that this is just the Chinese way of sending a message to the Thailanese saying “Don’t eff with us, we like pain.”
