Most Expensive Watermelon in the World

080606-pricey-melon-vmed-140Tokyo, Japan – A successful marine products dealer from Japan broke the record for winning the most expensive watermelon in the world. The unnamed Japanese man bid and won an auction for a premium Densuke watermelon for an uneconomical price of 650,000 YEN ($6,100 USD). “This is the highest price on record for a Densuke watermelon, and that probably means it’s the highest of any watermelon in Japanese history,” said Kazuyoshi Ohira, a spokesman for the Tohma Agricultural Cooperative in Hokkaido. MSNBC reported that the Densuke black watermelon is considered one of the luxury fruits in Japan which can only be grown on the northern island of Hokkaido. The picture in the left is a photo of the 17-pound (8-kilogram) premium Densuke watermelon neatly wrap up in ropes that you can use to hang yourself after eating the overpriced watermelon.

$6,000 USD for a watermelon! I’m not sure if I should be sad or happy for him. Honestly, I’d rather use that money to help out the Blue Dragon Children’s Foundation or donate $6,000 and use the $100 to buy myself square watermelon. I think I’d enjoy the square watermelon much more.
